Year 6 – Year 9
Successful learning in the Middle Years is dependent upon the level of engagement, wellbeing and cognitive skills developed across the Early Years.
The culture of this Reception to Year 12 school is supportive of the development of these important elements which foster the essential learning qualities of persistence, conscientiousness and a sense of self-efficacy
Middle School students are challenged with greater ownership for their own learning as they engage in collaborative problem solving, inquiry learning and interdisciplinary learning in flexible learning spaces. The learning environment in Middle School is more separated than the Primary Years and there is an expectation that students become independent learners with the capacity to be inventive and innovative.
Students in Years 6-9 undertake a range of subjects aligned with the Australian Curriculum. Their learning occurs through a continuous mixing of explicit teaching and negotiated learning. Students are provided with the skills to analyse their own learning style and negotiate a preferred method of preparing and presenting their learning.
Middle School students undertake a common curriculum in the following learning areas:
- English
- Mathematics
- Science (including Agricultural Science)
- Humanities & Social Sciences
- The Arts
- Health & Physical Education
- Technologies (Design & Technology, Media, Home Economics, Agricultural and Cross- curricula Technologies)

Middle schooling at Mount Compass recognises the needs of the adolescent learner and provides a broad curriculum that allows students to develop independent learning skills in an environment of mutual respect and trust.

What was the best part of being chosen as a Student Leader?
I like being able to know that people appreciate what I’ve done and to know people think I am the best I can be.
What do you love most about our school?
I love how people include others, how the teachers try to help you and how their help makes you understand. I also like how everyone in the community is there to support each other.
What would you like to change in our school?
I have come across a students’ problem where the water fountains have a murky taste and just doesn’t seem to be good quality. I would love to find a way for the water to taste better.
Joey, Year 7
What was the best part of being chosen as a Student Leader?
I like that I can help people and that other people think I can be a leader.
What do you love most about our school?
The people are very kind and help each other and the learning is fun. I really like it when my teachers make me think.
What would you like to change in our school?
I would like there to be more play equipment to use during break times.
Esha, Year 8
What was the best part of being chosen as a Student Leader?
The best part is that I can help people, care for them and assist them when they need it.
What do you love most about our school?
I love that people are always kind and always want to help others.
What would you like to change in our school?
I would like to let other students know that they can come to the library during lunch time and meet new people. I would also like it if Mount Compass had hockey and soccer.
Josh, Year 9
What was the best part of being chosen as a Student Leader?
I liked knowing that people thought I would be a good at this job and I like that I can be a good role more for younger people and try to make a difference.
What do you love most about our school?
The subjects and staff members – the staff are really nice and are there to help and the lessons are really informal.
What would you like to change in our school?
I think it would be good to get a mindfulness garden for break times for students that need it.

What was the best part of being chosen as a Student Leader?
The best part about being chosen means I can help people with what they need.
What do you love most about our school?
I love that the people here are so nice.
What would you like to change in our school?
I would like to improve what happens during learning time and during play time.

What was the best part of being chosen as a Student Leader?
I like knowing I will be able to see the impact that I can bring to the school.
What do you love most about our school?
The thing I love about our school is the teachers help, and help everyone. The school also give us amazing opportunities in every subject.
What would you like to change in our school?
I would like to encourage more academic opportunities in the school. Also being able to carry our bags around, but with the needed stationary because carrying the things around is too heavy and going up stairs safely is a bit of a hazard.

I like knowing that I have a say in what happens at our school.
What do you love most about our school?
I like the relationships between the students and teachers. I also like that everyone seems so kind.
What would you like to change in our school?
I would like it if the school could become involved in more sporting activities. I would also like to have a choice about using the new school lockers.

What was the best part of being chosen as a Student Leader?
The best part of being chosen as a Student Leader is knowing I have the opportunity to help people and speak for those who have trouble speaking for themselves.
What do you love most about our school?
I like that there is always someone to talk to, no matter if you are friends or not.
What would you like to change in our school?
If I could choose anything to change about out school it would be to get the younger students more involved with the older students. I think we could do this by spending more time with our buddy classes throughout the year.
