Middle School
prospectus

Year 7 – Year 9

Successful learning in the Middle Years is dependent upon the level of engagement, wellbeing and cognitive skills developed across the Early Years.

The culture of this Reception to Year 12 school is supportive of the development of these important elements which foster the essential learning qualities of persistence, conscientiousness and a sense of self-efficacy

Middle School students are challenged with greater ownership for their own learning as they engage in collaborative problem solving, inquiry learning and interdisciplinary learning in flexible learning spaces. The learning environment in Middle School is more separated than the Primary Years and there is an expectation that students become independent learners with the capacity to be inventive and innovative.

Students in Years 7-9 undertake a range of subjects aligned with the Australian Curriculum. Their learning occurs through a continuous mixing of explicit teaching and negotiated learning. Students are provided with the skills to analyse their own learning style and negotiate a preferred method of preparing and presenting their learning.
Middle School students undertake a common curriculum in the following learning areas:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science (including Agricultural Science)
  • Humanities & Social Sciences
  • The Arts
  • Health & Physical Education
  • Technologies (Technical Studies, Media, Design, Home Economics, Agricultural and Cross- curricula Technologies)
Respect, participate, achieve

Middle schooling at Mount Compass recognises the needs of the adolescent learner and provides a broad curriculum that allows students to develop independent learning skills in an environment of mutual respect and trust.
