LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Agriculture

Our school farm offers a number of extra learning experiences.

Our school is the regional focus school in Agriculture

Junior school students regularly experience farm life in all aspects of their curriculum and are engaged in a quality environmental program linked to the adjacent swamp and forest.

Middle School students have an exciting opportunity to raise two calves in the “Cows Create Careers” project and interact closely with a local farm.

Our school is currently developing student learning opportunities that encompass the interdependence of the farm, the swamp and the forest and we regularly conduct this experience for students from other local schools.

Our 28 ha Farm is a small commercial farm and teaching resource. Students manage up to 75 heifers, steers or cows and calves through the year supported by a quality pasture development program.

This highly productive farm is set up to model intensive block grazing principles. The farm is now being broadened to include chickens, sheep, pigs and goats.

Students regularly interact with industry groups that come to the farm. This creates strong links between students interested in an Agricultural pathway and regional employers.

Students have a great time feeding and training the calves. They have gained awards as seen on the ABC’s “Landline” programme and Channel 10’s “Totally Wild”.

Students spend many months of the year feeding and training goats, steers and heifers for showing at the Royal Adelaide Show. In 2017 one of our Mount Compass Area School bred Angus steers achieved 1st place in the Export Class.
