Middle School
prospectus

Year 6 – Year 9

Successful learning in the Middle Years is dependent upon the level of engagement, wellbeing and cognitive skills developed across the Early Years.

The culture of this Reception to Year 12 school is supportive of the development of these important elements which foster the essential learning qualities of persistence, conscientiousness and a sense of self-efficacy

Middle School students are challenged with greater ownership for their own learning as they engage in collaborative problem solving, inquiry learning and interdisciplinary learning in flexible learning spaces. The learning environment in Middle School is more separated than the Primary Years and there is an expectation that students become independent learners with the capacity to be inventive and innovative.

Students in Years 6-9 undertake a range of subjects aligned with the Australian Curriculum. Their learning occurs through a continuous mixing of explicit teaching and negotiated learning. Students are provided with the skills to analyse their own learning style and negotiate a preferred method of preparing and presenting their learning.
Middle School students undertake a common curriculum in the following learning areas:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science (including Agricultural Science)
  • Humanities & Social Sciences
  • The Arts
  • Health & Physical Education
  • Technologies (Design & Technology, Media, Home Economics, Agricultural and Cross- curricula Technologies)
Integrity, respect, kindness

Middle schooling at Mount Compass recognises the needs of the adolescent learner and provides a broad curriculum that allows students to develop independent learning skills in an environment of mutual respect and trust.

What was the best thing about being chosen as a Student Leader?
I liked knowing that I was considered responsible and kind enough to be a Student Leader. It also made me feel really proud. I look forward to working with the school to make new opportunities.

What do you love most about our school?
I love that is it a reception to year 12 school. This means we don’t ever have to move to a different school. I also like that we study Agriculture and we get to participate in the Royal Adelaide Show.

What would you like to change about our school?
I would like to change the students to become more respectful of each other. I would also like to make the yard more clean and have more fun things to do at break times.

Maddison, Year 8

MaddisonWhat was the best thing about being chosen as a Student Leader?
The best part about being chosen as a Student Leader is that I get t work with my classmates and peers about helping them out when they are in need.

What do you love most about our school?
The thing I love most about our school is the teacher and student relationship. Having a good relationship with you teacher can improve positive behaviour. This makes it easier to ask questions because you feel more comfortable

What would you like to change about our school?
I wouldn’t really change anything about Mount Compass because it is already a great school. Everybody is respectful and kind to each other which is good for a small school. However, one thing I would change would be the classroom setup, to allow for more flexible learning spaces.

What was the best thing about being chosen as a Student Leader?
I think the best part about being chosen is having the opportunity to help and encourage other students by being a role model and setting an example.

What do you love most about our school?
Mount Compass Area School is such an amazing school. Teachers and students have connections to everyone, and I love how everyone feels like they have somebody.

What would you like to change about our school?
If something had to change, I would focus on a wider variety of opportunities. Everyone has different interests and should have the chance to work towards trying something they are interested in.

What was the best thing about being chosen as a Student Leader?
The best part was the surprise of being selected. I enjoyed going to the zoo for the leadership training camp; I have really enjoyed meeting new people and bonding with them.

What do you love most about our school?
I like the bond that our students share with the teachers. I like our uniforms and having a farm, swamp and forest is also a unique and cool feature at our school.

What would you like to change about our school?
Even though I know it would be difficult, I would like to change the layout of our school. For example, I would like the library to be in a more accessible location.
